The Palin Effect

leave a comment »

It’s been a whirlwind of attacks on Sarah Palin since John McCain announced that she would be his running mate.  A lot has been said and written about her by people you’d think would be more helpful in sorting out the truth from fiction.  In a posting by Deepak Chopra titled Obama and the Palin Effect he uses cliches and buzzwords to belittle Palin.  Palin Effect indeed.  She has apparently had the effect of dumbing down a lot of normally very smart and thoughtful people.

The stuff by Chopra has some interesting suggestions but some of it is such an incredible stretch.  For example:

– Sarah Palin “stands for”  ignorance of world affairs??  That’s ridiculous…she may be way lacking in sufficient knowledge of world affairs but that’s a completely different thing.  Palin stands for ignorance of world affairs?  It’s hard to believe that Chopra would misuse words and phrases this way, accidentally or otherwise.

– Or  that “small town values” = “a return to petty, small-minded parochialism,” – how insulting to anyone who lives in a small town and values some things about their location and lifestyle; exactly what are his assumptions here?

– Or that “family values” = “code for walling out anybody who makes a claim for social justice,” without bothering to acknowledge that people have a lot of different “family values,”…things their family generally finds valuable in their lives together.

He’s painting with an awfully broad brush in trying to differentiate Palin and Obama.  A lot of others are doing the same thing.  Sarah Palin’s positions on a number of things don’t come close to lining up with mine, but I’ve been amazed at the amount of ridicule and contempt that’s been heaped on her.  I guess she’s been an easy target.  A lot of people who we’d like to think would be above all that should know that they don’t have to stoop to such measures.  If she’s even a tenth as incompetent as some are saying – the public isn’t stupid – then it will be apparent to all very soon.
