The view from here

Images from a Convention

Once the serious speeches started — John Kerry, Bill and HIllary Clinton, and Joe Biden among them– the Democratic National Convention took on some meaning.  But up until then the TV images were jarring, if not disturbing.  At one point during the first day a commentator shook his head and in a quick aside said, “what do you think someone from another country with no knowledge of what this is about…what do you think they would take away from these scenes?”  People wearing strange things; dancing and singing; apparently having the time of their lives with thousands of other, similarly occupied, people.  I’m all for people enjoying themselves.  I even enjoy just watching people have a good time.  But by the end of the second day of this it started to feel off key.

The problems that we expect our present and future leaders to help us with are complex and serious.  People are losing their jobs, their homes, and even their lives in the Middle East.  The speechmakers at the convention got around to addressing serious issues, but I was troubled by the images of what political engagement by ordinary citizens looks like if you base your conclusions on these images.  The officials and the stars look good; the regular people on the floor look silly, or worse.  These are the choices?
